† End of the 3rd century in Antinoë, today ruins at El-Roda in Egypt
According to tradition, Basilissa and Julian lived in Antinoë as a virgin married couple with an ascetic life. They opened their home to those in need and made it a place of nursing. Idols were therefore burned in response to their prayers. When Julian was captured as a martyr in the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian, his wife had already died.
Basilissa and Julian were already mentioned in the Martyrology of Jerome. Relics are found in the churches of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Paolo fuori le Mura in Rome and in the Cathedral of San Marco in Venice.
