Stephen was the first of seven deacons of the early Christian community in Jerusalem; these deacons had been ordained by the apostles by the laying on of hands after a conflict arose in the congregation between members with a Greek background and those with traditional Jewish backgrounds over the question of the care of widows. Deacons were now responsible for the proclamation of the faith as well as for the social concerns of the congregation and had the rank of church leaders who came close in importance to the Apostles (Acts 6:1-7). Stephen was a man of grace and strength, performing great miracles and signs among the people (Acts 6:8).
