Samonas was friends with Gurias, who lived as an ascetic and priest in Edessa – today’s Sanliurfa. Under the emperors Galerius and Maximianus, they suffered martyrdom, were tortured for three days, hung upside down, and finally beheaded. The deacon Habib is said to have buried the two. The three martyrs were worshipped together on a hill north of Edessa.
