Depicted are the Patron Saints of Conjugal Fidelity: Saint Martyrs Samonas and Gurias of Edessa and Habib. Above the blessing Christ.
Saint Samonas was friends with Gurias, who lived as an ascetic and priest in Edessa – today’s Sanliurfa. They experienced martyrdom under the emperors Galerius and Maximianus. The deacon Habib is said to have buried the two. The three martyrs were worshiped together on a hill north of Edessa. They are considered the patron saints of marital fidelity.
Remembrance Day: November 15th.
Poliment gilded background, punched and engraved with painted ornaments. Fine gold painting on the robes (assist).
Very nice, decorative icon.
