Saint Michael, the Archangel (November 8) is depicted as a soldier. Equipped with mighty wings, he wears soldiers’ clothing and a lance. The main attributes of the archangel are staff, sword and sphaira (globe). Saint Michael was considered the patron of the Byzantine emperors, whose flags also adorned his portrait.
