Saint Michael, the Archangel (November 8) is depicted as a soldier. Equipped with mighty wings, he wears soldiers’ clothing and a lance. The main attributes of the archangel are staff, sword and sphaira (globe). Saint Michael was considered the patron of the Byzantine emperors, whose flags also adorned his portrait. Above: Christ Pantocrator.
Saint Michael is considered the patron saint of the Catholic Church, the Germans, soldiers, merchants, bakers, pharmacists, paramedics, tailors, painters, bank clerks, poor souls, dying people and cemeteries; for a good death; against lightning and storms.
