The parents of the Mother of God Joachim and Anna (September 9). Saint Joachim is holding a scroll of text and Saint Anne is carrying the Blessed Mother as a child on the right.

Joachim and Anna are the legendary parents of Mary and thus the grandparents of Jesus. The apocryphal Gospel of Saint James, written around 150, describes Joachim as a pious, rich and generous old man who lived with his wife in Jerusalem – after John of Damascus at the Sheep Gate. Other tradition calls the old man a priest from the tribe of Levi or a descendant of David from the tribe of Judah. Joachim’s sacrifice in the temple was initially rejected by the chief priest because he had no descendants. Joachim retired into the desert; an angel appeared to him, met him in the field among his flocks, and then his wife Anna at her house; he instructed both to meet. They met at the Golden Gate, the promised child Mary was born.

They are considered the patron saints of married couples, carpenters, tanners and linen merchants.
